From #MeToo to breakthrough: How movements drive innovation

Read time:

Hong Luo

When the New York Times broke the news that Hollywood power player Harvey Weinstein repeatedly abused women in the industry, with many others enabling and even covering up his behaviour, it set off a maelstrom of anger on social media, culminating in the #MeToo movement.

It's been nearly a decade since the original story broke, and while #MeToo has waned in intensity, there are still echoes of the social movement in the world. No more so than in the movies themselves.

Hong Luo, an associate professor of strategic management, joined the Rotman Executive Summary to break down her research into how #MeToo not only changed the types of movies that got made and the stories that got told, but what lessons other industries can learn from how big social movements can spur innovation and change.
