Are we thinking about traffic congestion wrong?

Read time:

Victor Couture

No one enjoys sitting in traffic. It's tedious, bad for the environment, and costs local economies billions in lost productivity annually.

But is easing congestion really the answer? Research from associate professor Victor Couture finds that dense cities will always be slow cities, and that congestion is probably inevitable. But paradoxically, those dense, slow cities are also often the most economically vibrant ones: more people and more businesses more closely connected is more financially beneficial to everyone.

So how can policymakers and politicians rethink traffic? Where should we put our resources when it comes to transportation infrastructure?

Couture weighs in on the latest episode of the Executive Summary. Give it a listen above, catch up on the entire season below, or check out the episode on your favourite podcasting platform (AppleAmazonSpotify or YouTube). And, of course, don't forget to subscribe.
