I grew up on the mean streets of New York. Okay, the streets weren t all that mean, but there were a number of vicious dogs around.

I attended elementary and secondary school in Roslyn, New York. I then attended Harvard College for my undergrad degree in economics. After a year as a paralegal at Nutter, McClennen & Fish, P.C. (Louis Brandeis s firm!), I realized I did not want to become an attorney. I then worked for a couple of years at Temple, Barker & Sloane, Inc., a management consulting firm that is now part of Oliver Wyman.

After this sojourn in the business world, I attended MIT s Sloan School of Management for an MBA. I then went on to University of California Berkeley to obtain a master s degree in economics and a PhD in business administration. At this point, various friends and family members began to suggest that I should actually get a paying job, so in 1995 I joined the faculty at the University of Toronto s Rotman School of Management. I then joined the faculty of Harvard Business School in 1998. Realizing the error of my ways, I rejoined the Rotman School faculty in 2001.

My family and I live near Bloor West Village, where I can often be found sitting in the cafes and complaining about the lack of Saturday mail delivery in Canada.
