Current Research Interests:

The first research theme (carried out in collaboration with Hugh Gunz and Michael Jalland) has been to explore the impact of downsizing on careers in organizations and subsequent strategies. We have developed a theoretical model. We are looking at its application to an industry labor market. More recently we have expanded this to examining careers in the biotechnology industry.

A second interest involves the exploration of evolutionary psychology and its potential application to organizational behaviour. I am about to undertake a series of studies exploring the detection of defection in a prisoner's dilemma type game.

A third, continuing, major thrust over my career has been a methodological one. Initially, this was a concern with the logical problems in assessing change effects. This was developed in my "patch-up" design article and, more recently, in the program evaluation handbook (with D. A. Ondrack) published by Labour Canada. More recently, this methodological concern has taken a statistical bent; although the fundamental question is the same: how do you make accurate assessments of an effect, whether the threat to assessment is statistical or logical. Here my work with H. J. Arnold on moderated regression is important; I hesitate to say a"breakthrough" as our analyses were anticipated by Jacob Cohen. Nevertheless ours was an independent analysis. I continued this interest with a project designed to explore the impact of correlated error (between the dependent variable and a pair of independent variables) on the interaction term in hierarchical moderated regression analysis. The results appear in my "Monte-Carlo" article. Further discussion of this issue appears in the Journal of Information and Optimization Sciences. Most recently papers on the issue have appeared in American Psychologist and Canadian Psychology. Several other papers also pursue this theme. The most recent (written with Vinay Kanetkar and doctoral students Irvine, Millman, and Everell and published in Educational and Psychological Measurement))discusses how meta-analysis might be performed when the hypotheses involve interaction terms. Two more papers with Kanetkar are under development.

Recently, I have returned to a re-examination of the Path-Goal theory of leadership which I developed in the late 1960's. I suggested that the way a leader affected her/his subordinates might be through affecting components of the subordinate's motivation (i.e., expectancy theory variables).Subsequently Robert House expanded on the theory to develop the contingencies under which such behaviours were appropriate. Steven Kerr further elaborated on the idea with his work on"substitutes for leadership." In 1979, I provided a restatement of the theory in my textbook chapter on Leadership. More recently, an updated version is given the Path-Goal chapter for the German Language Dictionary of Leadership.

In addition to leadership, I have been exploring managerial roles to try to identify the skills needed for effective performance of the roles and how these bundle together. This theoretical endeavor appears in my "Manager as a Hero" which I am working on. The goal is to produce a full length monograph.

Finally, Murray Bryant (Accounting) and I are investigating the tacit knowledge required for effective performance as the leader of an audit team. We are basing this on Mintzberg's ten managerial roles and expect to develop good measures of these skills that can be used to predict later performance. At present we have developed a questionnaire that appears to discriminate between experts and novice accountants. The next step is to undertake further field validation.

In the past, my research interests have encompassed:

1. job satisfaction, with several papers exploring the meaning of the concept and the correlations among several operational definitions.
2. work motivation, with one paper exploring the job characteristics model, a second examining equity theory, and several on Herzberg's two factor theory.
3. organization design with one paper (with Will McQuillan) exploring the change in structure occurring with changes in the environment.
