U of T's Rotman School, Law Faculty Announce TSE Chair Holders
Paul J. Halpern, professor of finance and former interim dean of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, and Professor Jeffrey G. MacIntosh, a professor in U of T's Faculty of Law, are the first incumbents of U of T's Toronto Stock Exchange Chairs in Capital Markets. In January 1998, the Toronto Stock Exchange invested $2.75 million to establish the chairs and create an institute to bring together academics and leaders in industry and government to conduct research in Canadian capital markets and related public policy. The role of the chairs will be to conduct research and teaching activities in the area of capital markets, and to head the newly established Capital Markets Institute. Halpern will act as director of the institute, and MacIntosh as associate director. "The Capital Markets Institute will provide a forum for close collaboration between experts in law and business on a subject which is of vital importance to Canada and its future," said Roger Martin, dean of the Rotman School. "I am delighted that Paul Halpern will be helping to steer the institute at a time of unprecedented change and challenge in the Canadian economy. Halpern and McIntosh both bring outstanding research, administrative and teaching skills, as well as world-class expertise in capital markets to these important positions, which will play a key role in informing future debate on this pivotal issue." Ronald J. Daniels, dean of the Faculty of Law, was pleased with the appointment of MacIntosh: "Jeff MacIntosh is one of Canada's leading experts in corporation law. I have full confidence that under the direction of two such top-ranked researchers, the Capital Markets Institute will play a key role in the development of creative policy solutions and a principled examination of issues affecting capital markets."
