Study on International Firms in East Asia to be Released at U of T

TORONTO - Canadian firms can succeed in East Asia countries if they are properly prepared. The price will be high, however, if they fail to invest adequately in the knowledge needed to enter and operate in distant and unfamiliar markets.
These are the conclusions of a new publication of the Rotman School of Management's Institute for International Business, North American Firms in East Asia. It will be released at the HSBC Bank Canada Forum on East Asia to be held at the University of Toronto on Friday, October 29, 1999 at 12:00 pm at the Faculty Club, 41 Willcocks Street, Toronto.
The Forum's keynote speaker is John Lyon, Vice President, Business Development, Manulife Financial. He will discuss the life insurance sector in Japan based on perspectives gained through negotiations on Manulife Financial's new joint venture in Japan.
The Forum also features the Paper's main authors (A. Edward Safarian, University of Toronto; Paul W. Beamish, University of Western Ontario, and others). They will present a series of case studies which examine the ways in which eight firms of varying types have met the challenges of entering and operating in East Asia.
The study is the fifth volume of the HSBC Bank Canada Papers on Asia series, a project of the Institute for International Business dedicated to promoting Canada's business and economic relationships with the countries of East Asia, and to stimulate further research. The case studies presented have the advantage of providing readers with in-depth accounts of what various North American firms have encountered in Asia. At the same time, the cases can be used in conjunction with more general research in overcoming the challenges of operating in East Asia.
The forum is sponsored by the Institute for International Business, in partnership with the Asian Business Consortium, and the University of Toronto Press.
