TORONTO, August 17, 2001 --
Martin Evans, a professor of organizational behaviour at the University of Toronto’s Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, has been awarded the Distinguished Educator Award of the Academy of Management. He shares the award with Professor Paul Goodman of Carnegie Mellon University. Prof. Evans is only the second Canadian selected to receive the highest educational achievement award of the 12,000-member organization, presented during its annual meeting in Washington, DC, from August 3 to 8. Two-thirds of Academy of Management members are professors who teach and conduct research in management.
In presenting the award, Rick Mowday of the University of Oregon, former president of the Academy of Management, cited Prof. Evans' contributions to the learning and development of doctoral students. Quoting one of the nominators, he said, "Prof. Evans has left his indelible mark on literally hundreds of students he has taught and mentored." Prof. Evans has been the dissertation supervisor for 20 students and has served on an additional 40 dissertation committees, including some in Health Administration, Nursing, Social Work, and Educational Administration. One of his nominators added, "Those who [studied with him] could not escape his passion for rigorous research and his pursuit of knowledge creation -- research values he has instilled in his students."
In receiving the award, Prof. Evans said, “This award would not have been possible without the Rotman School’s continued support of the Doctoral Program since its inception over 30 years ago. This has given faculty members the time to provide high quality supervision to our students as well as the funds to attract high quality students.”
Prof. Evans' research in the areas of leadership, motivation, downsizing, research methods, and program evaluation has appeared in top organizational behaviour and psychological journals, as well as in several books. He has served in the past as Associate Dean (Research) and Director of the Doctoral Program at the Rotman School, and is currently co-editor of the international e-journal, M@n@gement.
The University of Toronto’s Rotman School offers leading-edge research and degree programs, including the prestigious Rotman MBA, the newly redesigned Part-Time MBA, the Executive MBA, a first-rate Doctoral Program, the distinctive Master of Management & Professional Accounting program, the undergraduate Commerce program in partnership with the Faculty of Arts and Science, combined programs with the University of Toronto faculties of Law, Engineering and Nursing, and an innovative series of Executive Programs tailored to the current needs of businesses and individual managers.
