STUDY ON EAST ASIA'S FUTURE ECONOMIC AND SECURITY CHALLENGES TO BE RELEASED AT U OF T
TORONTO, February 6, 2002 --
"Differing institutional responses to the Asian crisis and the U.S. recession will affect long-term growth prospects in East Asian economies in differing ways. Canadian governments and businesses should take account of these differences," concludes a book to be released by the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management's Institute for International Business.
The volume, East Asia in Transition: Economic and Security Challenges, will be released on Thursday, February 7, 2002 at a special roundtable, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Rotman School, 105 St. George Street, Toronto.
Four authors will present their findings. They include University of Toronto Professors A.E. Safarian, Wendy Dobson, Loren Brandt and Walid Hejazi. Each will examine key factors affecting Asia's long-term prospects including: the region's security challenges; whether China can sustain its growth; how governments prepare for ageing populations and address structural weaknesses revealed by the crisis; and governments' drive to develop their own regional institutions in trade and finance. Canada's business performance in East Asia is also evaluated in the volume, finding that it has been better than expected.
This is the sixth and final volume in the HSBC Bank Canada Papers on Asia series. Begun in 1995, these studies have a dual purpose: to examine Canada's relationships with the East Asian economies and to reduce the information barriers resulting from distance and unfamiliarity with these markets. Other titles in the series are:
- Benchmarking the Canadian Business Presence in East Asia (1995)
- East Asian Capitalism: Diversity and Dynamism (1996)
- The People Link: Human Resource Linkages Across the Pacific (1997)
- Fiscal Framework and Financial Systems in East Asia (1998)
- North American Firms in East Asia (1999).
The series editors are A.E. Safarian, Professor of Business Economics, and Wendy Dobson, Professor and Director, Institute for International Business, both from the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.
