Roger Martin and Nancy Lang Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching Awarded to Rotman Faculty.

January 14, 2000 - TORONTO, ON -- Professor Joel Baum, a leading researcher in the field of organizational theory, and Professor John Hull, an internationally recognized authority on financial engineering, are the first winners of the Roger Martin and Nancy Lang Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching at the Rotman School of Management. The awards were established through a generous donation to the Rotman School by Dean Roger Martin and his wife, Nancy Lang. The purpose of the awards is to recognize and encourage the research and teaching activities of faculty members at the Rotman School.

"Since excellence in research and reaching is at the heart of our mission as a School, Nancy and I decided that this was the best way for us to celebrate the achievements of the Rotman School's faculty," says Dean Roger Martin. "Rotman's program is distinguished largely by its research-based approach to management education, and we are very proud of the achievements of our distinguished faculty, who continue to achieve international acclaim for their work."

Joel Baum receives the Roger Martin and Nancy Lang Award for Excellence in Research for his groundbreaking work in the field of organizational theory and his research on the interaction of a firm's competitive interactions and organizational ecology. He is a professor of strategy and organization, cross-appointed to the U of T's Department of Sociology. He holds the Canadian National Chair in Strategic Management and is the PhD co-ordinator in Strategy at the Rotman School. As a researcher, Prof. Baum is instrumental in reshaping leading-edge thinking at the intersection of strategy and organizational behaviour. Currently he serves on the editorial boards of Administrative Science Journal and Academy of Management Journal and is editor-in-chief of Advances in Strategic Management.

Professor of Finance John Hull receives the Roger Martin and Nancy Lang Award for Excellence in Teaching for his extraordinary contributions to the MBA program. He is the recipient of the 1999 IAFE/Infinity Financial Engineer of the Year Award for his significant contributions to the field of derivatives, especially in the area of interest rate derivatives and management education. He has written two books "Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives" (now in its fourth edition) and "Introduction to Futures and Options Markets" (now in its third edition). Both books have been translated into several languages and are used, both in the classroom and by practicing financial engineers, throughout the world. He is currently working on a third book entitled "Financial Engineering and Risk Management," which will be published in the middle of next year. Despite his busy research agenda, Prof. Hull maintains a higher-than-average teaching load to accommodate demand for his classes and consistently wins MBA teaching awards from his students.
