Commerce Program Celebrates 75th Commerce Convocation. First BCom Degree Granted in 1924.
TORONTO - Seventy-five years after the first class graduated with Bachelor of Commerce degrees in 1924, the U of T's 75th Commerce class will be honoured at Convocation ceremonies on Tuesday, June 15. Two hundred and ten students will receive their degrees.
"This is a celebratory summer for Canada's pre-eminent commerce program," says Carl Amrhein, dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science. "As they celebrate 75 years of excellence, it's clear that U of T Commerce graduates have been a driving force in Canada's economic development and success throughout the Century."
"As we enter into the new millennium, U of T Commerce grads, will continue to play a leading role in shaping Canada's competitiveness," says Roger L. Martin, dean of the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management.
The anniversary will be marked with a special Commerce Convocation Reception on Tuesday, June 15 at 11:30 am at the Rotman School of Management to be followed by Convocation at 2:30 pm at the University of Toronto's Convocation Hall. The reception will feature remarks by Roger Martin and Carl Amrhein. Media are invited to attend the reception.
In the fall of 1920, 25 students registered in the Commerce program. Seven students, one women and six men, survived the program to graduate with Bachelor of Commerce degrees in 1924. The program has its origins in 1901 when a diploma program in Commerce was inaugurated in the U of T's Faculty of Arts. This was later transformed into a Bachelor of Arts program in Commerce and Finance in 1909.
Today, Commerce programs at the University of Toronto are offered jointly by the Rotman School of Management and the Faculty of Arts and Science. A four year Specialist program in Commerce and Finance leading to a Bachelor of Commerce degree and a Major in Commerce which leads to a three or four year Bachelor of Arts and Science are offered.
