PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

English for Professionals

Essential to your success in the Rotman MBA program are effective communication skills. The English for Professionals program was designed to address the needs of non-native English speakers as they enter this new phase of their academic and professional lives. Co-designed by the Rotman School of Management and professional communication consultants, English for Professionals is the collaborative effort of staff, faculty and qualified English language professionals who understand the demands on non-native speakers in Canada.

Participants of the English for Professionals program can expect to:

  • gain transferable skills and basic tools useful both in class at Rotman and in the real world
  • practice using real-world simulations
  • become more comfortable giving presentations, answering questions, and making comments
  • use of real case studies and Rotman materials help focus learning.

In 2010, the English for Professionals program was revamped in response to faculty feedback suggesting that native English speaking students were also in need of professional development in this area. Now called Rotman Boot Camp, the program is available, free of charge, to all incoming students under the umbrella of the PSO’s Pre-Program.

Speak Easy

IPSO developed the Speak Easy program to provide non-native English speaking students with both written and spoken communications assistance throughout the term. It offers ‘one-on-one’ sessions to help you focus on achieving your communications goal.

Accent Assessment & Management

Accents are part of a person’s personality and heritage. However, when an accent is so strong that it interferes with one’s ability to clearly transmit/communicate information to others, either one-on-one or in a lecture format, it is time to consider whether an accent management (reduction) class could be of benefit. Classes are designed to reduce those elements of an accent that most impact speech clarity.

Accent Assessment and Management is currently offered to faculty, MBA & PhD students at the School.
