Three Rotman School Finance Professors Named as Research Members with the European Corporate Governance Institute.

Toronto, January 3 – Three finance professors with appointments at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management have been named as research members with the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI).

Profs. Alexander Dyck, Andrey Golubov, and Pat Akey were selected based on the quality of their academic work in the field of corporate governance. They will be eligible to publish their academic work on corporate governance and stewardship in the ECGI Working Paper Series (Law and Finance).

These appointments reinforce the Rotman School’s reputation as the pre-eminent centre of excellence in governance research and teaching. The School leads in governance education in Canada with a series of executive education programs offered in partnership with the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD). The David & Sharon Johnston Centre for Corporate Governance Innovation also support academic research and teaching, generate practical tools and insights and host events that improve the effectiveness of boards.

ECGI is a global research network and an international scientific non-profit association which provides a forum for debate and dialogue focusing on major corporate governance issues. Based in Brussels, it is the home for all those with an interest in corporate governance offering membership categories for academics, practitioners, patrons and institutions.

Alexander Dyck is a Professor of Finance and Economic Analysis and Policy at the Rotman School and holds the Manulife Financial Chair in Financial Services. He is a graduate of Western University (BA) and Stanford University (PhD). He is Academic Director of the Director’s Education Program, Director of the Capital Markets Institute, a Fellow at the Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship, and serves on the Academic Advisory Board of the Canadian Coalition of Good Governance, and on the External Advisory Board, OSFI, Culture and Conduct Risk Division. Previously, he was Associate Professor at the Harvard Business School where he taught in the MBA, doctoral and executive education programs, and has been a visiting scholar at INSEAD and Yale. He teaches courses in Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions and Private Equity in the PhD, MBA and undergrad programs. His research interests include corporate governance, corporate finance, sustainability, pensions, regulation and privatization, the media and financial markets, and taxation.

Andrey Golubov is an Associate Professor of Finance at the Rotman School. Prior joining the school in 2015, he was a faculty member at Bayes Business School in London; and he also held visiting positions at NYU Stern and UBC Sauder. He studies how firms make investment and financing decisions, particularly those involving corporate control considerations. His current research examines various aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and firm value and performance. His research on these topics is published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Finance. Prof. Golubov is the 2020 recipient of the Bank of Canada Governor's Award and has been named as one of the Poets & Quants Top 40 Under 40 Business Professors. He currently teaches mergers and acquisitions in the MBA and executive education programs.

Pat Akey is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Toronto Mississauga with a cross-appointment to the Rotman School. He holds a PhD in finance from the London Business School. His research focuses on the political economy of finance and the incentives of firms to engage in pro-social behavior. He has presented his research at numerous major academic and practitioner conferences and published in the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies. He was awarded the 2021 Brattle Prize Distinguished Paper for one of the best papers in corporate finance published by the Journal of Finance and the 2016 Rising Scholar Award for the best paper by a young researcher published in the Review of Financial Studies.
