Five Rotman School Faculty Receive Research Grants from the Government of Canada

Toronto, June 24, 2022 – Research projects by five professors at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management have been awarded funding totaling over $600,000 from two Government of Canada agencies.

Sheng Liu, an Assistant Professor of Operations Management and Statistics, was awarded a Discovery Grant for $147,500 from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's (NSERC) Discovery Research program. The program supports world-class research programs in a wide variety of natural sciences and engineering disciplines. Prof. Liu’s project will look at “Predictive and Prescriptive Analytics for Equitable and Efficient Service Provision in Smart Cities.”

Sarah Kaplan, Distinguished Professor of Gender & the Economy and Director, Institute for Gender and the Economy (GATE) has received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Knowledge Synthesis Grant of $22,228 for her project on “The Intersectional Gendered Impacts of Hybrid Work in the Post COVID-19 Economy.” Knowledge Synthesis Grants support researchers in producing knowledge synthesis reports and evidence briefs that support the use of evidence in decision-making and the application of best practices; and assist in developing future research agendas.

Three Rotman professors were awarded SSHRC Insight Grants, which support research excellence in the social sciences and humanities. Funding is available to emerging and established scholars for research initiatives of two to five years.

The project by Mitchell Hoffman, an Associate Professor of Strategic Management, will look at "Hiring, Incentives, and Startups: New Directions in Personnel Economics.” It received a grant of $122,989.

Franco Wong, a Professor of Accounting, received a grant of $269,668 for his project on “Understanding Corporate Textual Disclosure and Analyst Research.”

Baohua Xin, an Associate Professor of Accounting, was awarded a grant of $69,793 for his project on “Accounting and Auditing, Capital Market and Investment Effects, and Social Welfare.”
