Faculty Members Honoured with Awards for Research and Teaching at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
Toronto, March 3, 2022 – Four faculty members at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management were honoured with awards for their research and teaching today.
Prof. Will Mitchell posthumously received the Distinguished Scholarly Contribution Award, which recognizes and encourages research and research-related service that contribute to the development of a robust and dynamic research environment within and beyond the Rotman community. Prof. Mitchell was a much beloved professor of strategic management who died suddenly in December 2021.
Prof. Sonia Kang is the recipient of the Outstanding Research Impact Award, which recognizes research and other professional activity that has a significant impact on external non-academic audiences including the business and public policy communities both locally and internationally.
And three faculty members were awarded with the Roger Martin Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching. Established by Professor Emeritus Roger Martin, a former Dean of the Rotman School, the awards are presented annually to faculty members who have achieved distinction for their teaching or research activities. The co-winners of the Roger Martin Excellence in Research Award are Profs. Ryan Webb and Ningyuan Chen. The winner of the Roger Martin Excellence in Teaching Award is Prof. John Hull.
Will Mitchell was a professor of strategic management and held the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization. He served as the co-academic director of the Global Executive MBA in Healthcare and the Life Sciences. Before he joined the Rotman School in 2011, he was a professor at Duke University and the University of Michigan. He received his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. He also served as co-editor of Health, Management, Policy, and Innovation and consulting editor of the Strategic Management Journal and was an active member of the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management.
Sonia Kang holds the Canada Research Chair in Identity, Diversity, and Inclusion and is an associate professor of organizational behaviour and human resource management at the University of Toronto Mississauga and is cross-appointed to the Rotman School. She is also a faculty research fellow at the Institute for Gender and the Economy and a chief scientist at the Behavioural Economics in Action at Rotman research centre. Her research takes a novel approach by harnessing the power of behavioral insights and organizational design to disrupt systems, processes, and structures that block the path toward diversity and inclusion for individuals, organizations, and society.
Ryan Webb is an associate professor of marketing and director of the TD Management Data and Analytics Lab (TD MDAL) at the Rotman School. His research integrates the disciplines of neuroscience, psychology, and economics to provide insight into consumer behaviour. His recent research includes developing tools to predict consumer choices from measurements of neural activity and modelling consumer behaviour from the principles of information coding in the human brain He received his PhD from Queens University and has held research fellowships from New York University and the California Institute of Technology. He is on the editorial board of PNASnexus.
Ningyuan Chen is an assistant professor of business analytics the at University of Toronto Mississauga and is cross-appointed to the Rotman School. Before joining the University of Toronto, he was on the faculty of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and was a postdoctoral associate at Yale University after receiving his Ph.D. from Columbia University. His research interests include various approaches to making data-driven decisions in the context of revenue management, including online learning and machine learning.
John Hull is the Maple Financial Group Chair in Derivatives and Risk Management, a University Professor and the academic director of Rotman FinHub, the school’s financial innovation lab. He has previously served as a co-director of both the Master of Financial Risk Management and Master of Finance programs. His research and teaching interests include derivatives, regulation and risk management, and financial innovation. He is the author of three leading textbooks on derivatives and risk management that are widely used in classrooms and trading rooms throughout the world and a new textbook on machine learning in business.
