Rotman School Professor Honoured for His Contributions to the Field of Strategic Management.

Toronto, August 12, 2021 – Will Mitchell, a professor of strategic management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, is the 2021 recipient of the William D. Guth Distinguished Service Award from the Strategic Management division of the Academy of Management.

The award is presented every second year to a member of the Strategic Management division with at least 15 years of service to the field, who has made significant contributions to activities within the division, the Academy of Management, and to the broader field of strategic management. The award was announced earlier this month during the annual meeting of the Academy of Management, which is the largest and most prominent professional association of management and organization professors and PhD students, with nearly 20,000 international members.

At the Rotman School, Prof. Mitchell holds the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization, in addition to being the Co-Director of the Rotman Global Executive MBA for Healthcare and the Life Sciences. He studies business dynamics in developed and emerging markets, investigating how businesses change as their competitive environments change and, in turn, how the business changes contribute to ongoing corporate and social performance. Prof. Mitchell is the co-author of Build, Borrow, or Buy: Solving the Growth Dilemma and teaches courses in business strategy, emerging market and international strategy, entrepreneurship, and healthcare and life sciences strategy.

Throughout his academic career, Prof. Mitchell has been involved in many aspects of both the Academy of Management and Strategic Management Society first participating in seminars at the organization’s annual meetings then moving into leadership positions. He was elected to the Academy of Management Fellows Group in 2013, to the SMS Fellows group in 2007, and twice served as a Board Member at the Strategic Management Society. He is also a co-chair for the 2021 Strategic Management Society annual conference. Among his many editorial positions, he was Co-Editor at the Strategic Management Journal (SMJ) from 2007-2016 and is currently serving as a Consulting Editor. He is also currently the Senior Editor of Health and Management Policy & Innovation. He received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Academy of Management in 2010 and the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the Academy in 2009.

Before joining the Rotman School, he was a faculty member at Duke University and the University of Michigan. He has served in many academic and service positions at all three institutions. In addition, Prof. Mitchell has been the chair or co-chair of over 38 dissertation committees, in addition to being a committee member on a further 32 dissertation committees. Prof. Mitchell holds a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and a BBA from Simon Fraser University.
