Article by Rotman Professor recognized as 2018 HBR McKinsey Awards finalist.

Toronto, Apr. 16, 2019 An article co-authored by Joshua Gans, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has been recognized as a finalist for the 2018 HBR McKinsey Award, which honors the best Harvard Business Review article of the year.

In “Strategies for Start-ups,” Prof. Gans, with co-authors Erin L.Scott and Scott Stern of MIT’s Sloan School of Management, write that in their haste to get to market first, entrepreneurs often run with the first plausible strategy they identify. They can improve their chances of picking the right path by investigating four generic go-to-market strategies and choosing a version that aligns most closely with their founding values and motivations.

Joshua Gans is a professor of strategic management and holder of the Jeffrey S. Skoll Chair of Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Rotman School (with a cross appointment in the Department of Economics). Since 2013, he has also been Area Coordinator of Strategic Management. He is also Chief Economist of the Rotman School’s Creative Destruction Lab. He holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University and an honors degree in economics from the University of Queensland. His research is primarily focused on understanding the economic drivers of innovation and scientific progress, and has core interests in digital strategy and antitrust policy. His most recent book, coauthored with Rotman Professors Ajay Agrawal and Avi Goldfarb, is Prediction Machines: The Simple Economics of Artificial Intelligence (HBR Press).

The 2018 award was won by Harvard Business School professors Michael E. Porter and Nitin Nohria with their article, “How CEOs Manage Time.”
