Rotman Professors Win Best Paper Awards for Work in Strategic Management and Finance.
Toronto, September 27, 2018Research papers by a professor of strategic management and a professor of finance at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School have been honoured with “Best Paper” awards.
A paper by Anita McGahan, the George E. Connell Chair in Organizations and Society and a professor of strategic management, co-authored with Harvard Business School Professor Michael E. Porter, received the Dan and Mary Lou Schendel Best Paper Prize from the Strategic Management Society. The award is for a paper published in the Strategic Management Journal five or more years prior to the award year. This delay allows time for the impact of papers to be assessed in terms of citations and influence of the paper on teaching, research, and/or practice. The paper, ‘How much does industry matter, really?,’ was published in the July 1997 edition of the journal. During the same event, Prof. McGahan received the inaugural Educational Impact Award from the Strategic Management Society, at which SMS President Russell Coff described Prof. McGahan as a ‘best athlete’ for her outstanding research, teaching and service. Profs. McGahan and Porter requested that the monetary portion of their award be directed to the Richard E. Caves scholarship fund at Harvard University. Prof. Caves was the doctoral supervisor of both Prof. Porter (Harvard PhD 1973) and Prof. McGahan (Harvard PhD 1990). Upon accepting the award, Prof. McGahan noted that “Richard Caves’s integrity, academic values, and intellectual contributions have been a beacon for me and Mike, and we are thrilled to direct this award to a scholarship fund in Dick’s name.”
A paper co-authored by Craig Doidge, a professor of finance, received the Jensen Prize for Corporate Finance and Organizations for the best paper published in the Journal of Financial Economics in the areas of corporate finance and organizations. The paper, “The U.S. Listing Gap”, appeared in March 2017 and is co-authored with Andrew Karolyi, a professor and deputy dean of the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University and René Stulz, the Everett D. Reese Chair of Banking and Monetary Economics at the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University. The prize is named after Michael Jensen, the founding editor of the Journal who is the Jesse Isidor Straus Professor of Business Administration, Emeritus, at Harvard Business School.
