Rotman School Strategy Professor Receives Canada Research Chair in Strategy, Organizations, and Society.

Toronto, November 27, 2017 – How organizations contribute to equality – or inequality – in the workplace, labour markets and society as a whole is a central question to building diverse workforces. Yet while we have learned a great deal about the extent and pattern of employment discrimination in recent decades, research is just beginning to unravel the biases built into organizational processes and policies for hiring.

A professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management was named a Canada Research Chair, by the Government of Canada to conduct research, which will provide evidence and information to help managers, companies, and policy makers effectively build more diverse, equitable and fair workplaces and societies.

András Tilcsik, an associate professor of strategic management, will hold the Canada Research Chair in Strategy, Organizations, and Society. Prof. Tilcsik is known for his research and teaching on catastrophes and risk management. He is a faculty fellow at the Rotman School’s Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship. Earlier this year he was named to the 2017 Thinkers50 Radar list of the 30 management thinkers in the world most likely to shape the future of how organizations are managed and led. In 2015, Prof. Tilcsik and his colleague Chris Clearfield won the Bracken Bower Prize from McKinsey and the Financial Times, given to the best business book proposal by scholars under 35. The book, Meltdown: Why Our Systems Fail and What We Can Do About It, will be published by Penguin in 2018.

Established in 2000, the Canada Research Chairs program not only supports important research but also helps Canadian universities attract and retain the best and most promising researchers from around the world. In addition to conducting research that improves the country’s depth of knowledge and quality of life, the chairs also train the next generation of leaders in their fields through student supervision and teaching. The chair for Prof. Tilcsik was among twenty new Canada Research Chairs at the University of Toronto announced earlier this fall.

The Rotman School of Management is located in the heart of Canada’s commercial and cultural capital and is part of the University of Toronto, one of the world’s top 20 research universities. The Rotman School fosters a new way to think that enables our graduates to tackle today’s global business and societal challenges. For more information, visit www.rotman.utoronto.ca.
