Rotman Professor Honoured as Canadian Risk Manager of the Year

Toronto, November 8, 2013 – A professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has been named as the Canadian Risk Manager of the Year by PRMIA, the Professional Risk Managers' International Association.

John Hull holds the Maple Financial Group Chair in Derivatives and Risk Management and is a professor of finance at the Rotman School.

The award was presented this week in Toronto at the Canadian Risk Forum organized by the Toronto chapter of PRMIA.

Prof. Hull is widely known among both practitioners and academics for research and textbooks on risk and derivatives. His research is currently focused on credit risk and credit derivatives.

He was, with Rotman Prof. Alan White, one of the winners of the Nikko-LOR research competition for his work on the Hull-White interest rate model. He has acted as consultant to many North American, Japanese, and European financial institutions.

He is best known for his books Risk Management and Financial Institutions (now in its 3rd edition), Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives (now in its 8th edition), and Fundamentals of Futures and Options Markets (now in its 8th edition). His books have been translated into many languages and are widely used in trading rooms throughout the world, as well as in the classroom.

He has won many teaching awards, including University of Toronto's prestigious Northrop Frye award, and was voted Financial Engineer of the Year in 1999 by the International Association of Financial Engineers. In 2010, he was awarded the PRIMIA Higher Standard Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Risk magazine. He is an Associate Editor of eight academic journals.

Prof. Hull is the co-director of the Rotman Master of Finance (MFin) Program, a 20-month program for working professionals in the Finance industry. He teaches in both the MBA and MFin programs.
