Rotman Faculty and Graduates Honoured at Academy of Management Conference

Toronto , August 24, 2010 – Four professors and graduates of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management were honoured during the Academy of Management’s recent annual meeting held in Montreal earlier this month. The Academy is a leading professional association for scholars dedicated to creating and disseminating knowledge about management and organizations.

Gary Latham, Secretary of State Professor of Organizational Effectiveness was named as the 2010 winner of the Practice-Relevant Scholarship Award. This award is in recognition of many contributions in organizational behaviour and in particular his 2009 book, Becoming the evidence-based manager: Making the science of Management work for you.

Adjunct Professor Heather Fraser, who is director of Rotman DesignWorks, was a participant in the Best Symposium in Management Education and Development, which was chaired by Jeanne Liedtka, a Darden School of Business professor. The symposium, "Finding the Right Side of the MBA Brain: Teaching Design Thinking," examined the how and why behind teaching design thinking, at both theoretical and practical levels.

Alexander Oettl, a graduate of the Rotman PhD Program was a finalist for the Business Policy and Strategy Division’s Best Dissertation Award. His PhD supervisor was Professor Ajay Agrawal, who holds the Peter Munk Junior Professorship in Entrepreneurship.

As previously announced, Professor Anita McGahan, who holds the Rotman Chair in Management at the Rotman School and is cross appointed to the Munk School of Public Affairs, is the recipient of the Academy of Management Business Policy and Strategy Division's 2010 Irwin Outstanding Educator Award. The award is designed to recognize a person who has demonstrated a long-term commitment to and expertise in educating students. This year’s award is given specifically for contributions to teaching students in MBA, undergraduate students, or executive education programs.
