ROTMAN PROFESSOR WINS PRESTIGIOUS JAPANESE AWARD
Wendy Dobson, professor of international business, is the 1998 winner of
the Ohira Prize, awarded for a distinguished study of the Asia-Pacific economies.
The prize of $1 million yen will be awarded at a June 12 ceremony in Tokyo.
Prof. Dobson co-edited Multinationals and East Asian Integration, the work
of a team of 11 economists in China and the ASEAN economies with Prof. Chia
Siow Yue, National University of Singapore and the Institute of Southeast
Asian Studies. The Ohira Prize, awarded annually by a Japanese foundation,
is named after former Japanese prime minister Masayoshi Ohira.
CLASS OF '98 GRADUATES THIS MONTH
Convocation ceremonies will be held this month for graduates of the MBA,
MMPA, EMBA and Commerce programs at the Rotman School. Convocation for graduates
of the Master programs will be held on June 11 at 10:00 am. Two honorary
degrees will be awarded. The Honorable Roy McMurtry, chief justice of the
Ontario Court of Justice (General Division) and former Ontario attorney general,
will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. U of T graduate Ian Scott,
also a former attorney general, will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree.
A reception will follow the ceremony in the Fleck Atrium from 12:00 - 2:30
pm with light refreshments being served.
The Bachelor of Commerce convocation will be held on June 16 at 2:30 pm,
with a reception to follow in the Fleck Atrium. Canadian actor Donald Sutherland
will be awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree. Faculty interested in

EMBA STUDENTS FROM BRAZIL STUDY AT ROTMAN SCHOOL
Forty-five EMBA students from the Business School of Sao Paulo in Brazil
are studying at the Rotman School, reports Prof. Dan Ondrack, acting director
of Executive Development Programs. The students began a two-week executive
education program, "Managing in the Global Economy,"on May 25. This is the
first of four groups from the Business School of Sao Paulo that will be studying
at the Rotman School this summer. The Executive Development Program provides
the international study tour component of the Sao Paulo EMBA program.
NEW DEAN MEETS WITH ROTMAN FACULTY AND STAFF
Faculty and staff had the opportunity to meet Roger Martin, the new
dean of the Rotman School, at a reception on May 19 in the CIBC Room. Martin
said he was looking forward to working with the current faculty and staff
to continue to improve the Rotman School and to transform it into one of
the top business schools in North America.
Before he officially takes over as dean on September 1, Martin will be visiting
the School periodically throughout the summer. He has set aside time to meet
individually with faculty and key staff members. Interested faculty may contact

Martinıs appointment continues to attract considerable media coverage, including
a brief news item in the Financial Times of London. Martin also appeared
on the May 11 edition of Canada AM.
NEW DIRECTOR OF EXECUTIVE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS APPOINTED
Michael Hartmann is the new director of the Rotman Schoolıs Executive
Development Programs, effective June 22. Since 1992, he has been manager
of the Asian Business Studies Program - University of Toronto/York University
where he managed training and research programs. Hartmann brings to the
directorıs job his background in training and development.
Prof. Dan Ondrack, who served as acting director, will become the academic
director of the Executive Development Programs.
ORIENTATION SESSION HELD FOR INCOMING MMPA CLASS
An orientation dinner was held on June 1 for the incoming Master of Management
and Professional Accounting class at the University of Toronto at Mississauga.
Approximately 100 students, faculty and guests including representatives
of companies that participate in the MMPA co-op program attended the dinner,
which is one in a series of orientation events for the new students. Other
events included communications and team building workshops and presentations
by representatives from the Ontario Institute of Chartered Accountants and
the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.
MOVIE MAGIC TRANSFORMS ROTMAN SCHOOL
During the last week of May, a film crew turned parts of the Rotman School
into a fictional radio station for the filming of several scenes of the movie
"Urban Legend." The crew coordinated with Gabriela Kampouris, manager building
operations and services, to minimize disruptions in the Rotman Schoolıs daily
schedule. Most of the filming took place after 6 pm and was concentrated
in the Business Information Centre. This was the second time that the Rotman
School has been used as a movie set.
THIRSTY THURSDAY CONTINUES THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER
"School may be out, but Thirsty Thursdays are still going strong," reports
Lenore MacAdam, MBA'99, social representative for the Graduate Business Council.
She says the dynamics are a bit different with the event starting a
little earlier, around 6 or 6:30 pm, and the dress code is a tad more upscale
since people are in the workforce again.
"So come out, have a beer, see your classmates, and who knows - maybe Ramy
will start showing up again," says MacAdam.

MBA STUDENTS AND YOUNG ALUMNI NETWORK SIZZLE WITH BBQ
All current MBA students, faculty and alumni from the classes of 1996-98
are invited to attend the first annual MBA Student and Young Alumni Network
BBQ. The event will be held at the Woodsworth College Courtyard at 119 St.
George Street on June 10 from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

FIFTH ANNUAL EMBA GOLF CLASSIC TO BE HELD JUNE 29
EMBA students, graduates and faculty will be hitting the links for the Fifth
Annual EMBA Golf Classic at the Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club in
Stouffville on June 29. Eighty golfers are expected to participate in the
dayıs events, which begins with a BBQ lunch at 11:45 am and ends with dinner
and prizes. Organizers promise a fun day of golf and frivolity and invite
all graduates to come out, regardless of golfing ability. For more information

COMMERCE CLASS OF 88 REUNITES AT ROTMAN SCHOOL
The Bachelor of Commerce class of 1988 is holding a "Retro Night" ten-year
reunion at the Rotman School on June 5. At least 50 graduates are expected

END OF YEAR PARTY FOR ROTMAN STAFF AND FACULtY
Staff and faculty of the Rotman School are invited to the CIBC Room on June
12 at 3 pm to mark the end of the school year. It will be an opportunity
to say goodbye to staff and faculty who have recently left and to welcome
the newcomers to the Rotman School.
FACULTY NEWS
Eric Kirzner, adjunct professor of finance, has been appointed director
of the EMBA Program, effective July 1, reports Paul Halpern, interim dean
of the Rotman School. Prof. Kirzner has been involved in teaching EMBA courses
for a number of years. He succeeds Joe DıCruz, professor of strategic
management.
Gary Latham, Secretary of State professor of organizational effectiveness,
and Tom McCurdy, professor of finance, have been elected to the Rotman
School Executive Committee as representatives of the full professor constituency.
They will serve a two-year term on the committee, which is main governing
body of the Rotman School.
Sandy Borins, professor of strategic management and chair, division
of management and economics, University of Toronto at Scarborough, has recently
completed a book entitled Innovating with Integrity: How Local Heroes
are Transforming American Government. The book will be published by
Georgetown University Press in September 1998.
Laurence Booth, professor of finance, participated in a roundtable
discussion of the financial system organized by the Department of Finance
to brief a visiting OECD team on May 22. On May 26, Prof. Booth appeared
on Telelatino in a show chaired by John Crispo, professor emeritus,
to discuss the bank mergers. Other guests included representatives from Toronto
Dominion Bank and MP Tony Ianno (Trinity-Spadina) who is heading up the Liberal
task force looking at the mergers. Prof. Booth appeared before the Liberal
task force on June 1 and presented a brief on the pros and cons of the bank
mergers.
Since the release of the report of the Technical Committee on Business Taxation,
its chair, Jack Mintz, Arthur Andersen professor of taxation, has
been on the speaking circuit explaining the report. He appeared before the
House of Commons Finance Committee on May 26 and will reappear on June 8.
The Canadian Tax Foundation also held a two-day conference on the report
where tax specialists reacted to its contents. Prof. Mintz has already spoken
at 17 conferences and seminars, including the Alliance for Manufacturers
and Exporters, Retail Council of Canada, Canadian Federation for Independent
Business and the Rotman Schoolıs Master in Management and Professional Accounting
Program. Many articles on the taxation report have appeared in the press,
including the Financial Times of London, the Financial Post
and the Globe and Mail.
An article by Hugh Gunz, associate professor of organizational behaviour,
Mike Jalland, associate professor of strategic management, and Martin
Evans, professor of organizational behaviour, entitled "New Strategy,
Wrong Managers? What you need to know about career streams," was published
in the May issue of the Academy of Management Executive.
STAFF CHANGES
Jane Flynn, director of the MBA Career Management Centre, has announced
that she will resign her position, effective June 30, to pursue full time
studies in the MBA program at the Rotman School.
"Jane has been a huge asset to the Rotman School. She has built the most
professional and highly regarded career service at a business school in Canada
and one that continues to improve every day," said Richard Kurovsky, assistant
dean, marketing and communication, in an e-mail memo to the Rotman School.
"She has been relentless and effective in meeting the needs of her customers,
both students and recruiters. We wish Jane the best in the MBA Program, and
are happy she will be close by while completing her studies."
Mary Cunningham has been promoted to to the assistant dean and chief
administrative officer. She has been with the Rotman School for about six
months as a financial assistant. Prior to that, she had a long career in
the Deanıs office of the Faculty of Medicine.
The Career Management Centre has announced the appointment of Asya Elahi
as the new career officer. Previously, she had been working in the Office
of Student Affairs. She will work in all areas of the career management centre.
Dabbie Lau has been appointed student services representative for
the MBA program. Prior to coming to Canada in 1990, she spent 13 years providing
administrative support at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Most recently,
Lau worked at the University of Toronto at Scarborough for the co-op program
in management. This new position fulfills a long-standing plan to improve
service to the Rotman School's MBA students. Lau will be working at the student
services help desk located in the MBA lounge on the second floor of the Rotman
School.
NEWSMAKERS
The Rotman School Distinguished Business Alumni Award dinner on May 13 attracted
a sold-out crowd, including 275 of Canada's top business leaders. Shaw Media
President and CEO John Cassaday, MBA'81, was presented with the award. The
dinner was featured in a photo spread in the May 30 edition of the
Financial Post that included pictures of Joseph Rotman, chairman
and CEO of Clairvest Group, and JR Shaw, chairman and CEO of Shaw Communications.
