SUCCESS REPORTED IN FACULTY RECRUITMENT AS FIVE ARE HIRED

A successful faculty recruitment effort has resulted in the hiring of five excellent new faculty members at the Rotman School reports, Prof. Peter Pauly, associate dean, research and academic resources. The new professors will join the school on July 1, filling open positions in finance, strategic management, operations management and marketing.

Kimberly Bates will join the School as an assistant professor of strategic management. She comes to us from the Stern School of Business at New York University, where she was assistant professor, management and operations management. Prof. Bates received her Ph.D. in operations and management science from the University of Minnesota in 1995.

Tarun Dewan brings his knowledge in competitive interaction and equilibrium, retailing and promotions as an assistant professor of marketing. He joins the Rotman School from the University of Texas at Dallas where he is completing a Ph.D. in marketing.

Ann Chan will become an assistant professor of operations management. Currently she is an assistant professor in the Department of Management at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prof. Chan completed her Ph.D in operations research at Columbia University in 1995. Her research interests include logistics, transportation, inventory, routing and facility layout and production planning.

Kristina Dahlin joins the Rotman School as assistant professor of strategic management. She comes to us from the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University where she is completing her Ph.D, in organizational behaviour and theory.

The Division of Management and Economics at the U of T at Scarborough has hired Jason Wei as a tenured associate professor of finance. He will add to the U of Tıs well-known expertise in derivatives research and will teach finance at both Scarborough and the Rotman School. Wei is currently associate professor of finance at the College of Commerce at the University of Saskatchewan. He completed his Ph.D at the Rotman School in 1992.

U OF T ALUMNUS DONATES $1 MILLION TO CREATE FINANCE CHAIR

Peter Mitchelson, B.Comm.'64, and the Sit Investment Associates Foundation have donated $1 million to the Rotman School Campaign. The gift, matched by the university, establishes the University of Toronto Peter L. Mitchelson / Sit Investment Associates Chair in Investment Strategy. The chair will prepare tomorrow's fund managers for leadership careers in investment management and be involved in research activities related to sound investment principles and procedures.

"The Rotman School is well known and respected for the work we do in corporate and investment finance," says Dean Paul Halpern. "The gift will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to compete in the expanding area of investment management."

Mitchelson is the president and chief investment strategist of Sit Investment Associates Inc. of Minnesota.

ROTMAN CAMPAIGN MEETS WITH MBA GRADUATES

The first round in a series of alumni renewal meetings for MBA graduates has concluded. The evening events gave 40 MBA alumni from the graduating classes of 1980 to 1996 an opportunity to receive updates on events at the Rotman School and be invited to take part in the Rotman Campaign. Mark Sack, executive director, development, Jennifer Lackey, director, alumni relations, and Dean Halpern hosted the events. Aran Hamilton, MBA'99, and Jenine Krause, MBA'99, played an instrumental role in organizing the evenings.

The series will continue this spring with meetings for MBA graduates from 1970 to 1979.

EXECUTIVE ALLIANCE LAUNCHED IN HONG KONG BY DEAN HALPERN

Dean Paul Halpern officially launched the U of T / McGill Executive Programs Alliance in Hong Kong during a reception on March 17. Over 50 U of T graduates working in Hong Kong attended the reception to meet with the Dean. The executive programs begin in June. Courses in derivatives featuring Rotman School finance professors John Hull and Alan White will be two of the first offerings.

GLOBAL EXECUTIVE MBA ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

An advertising campaign for the new "Global Option"of the Executive MBA was launched on March 12 with ads in the Financial Post, The Globe and Mail and Canadian Business magazine, reports Prof. Joseph D'Cruz, director of the EMBA program. The Global Executive MBA is a second-year EMBA option to begin in August 1998. Participants from Canada, Europe and Asia will combine three intensive three-week modules of coursework and industry visits with two three-month periods of individual and group work via the Internet. Modules take place in Toronto, Hong Kong/mainland China, and Europe respectively. The ad campaign will continue over the next several months.

CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS UPCOMING EVENTS

The Centre for International Business heads into spring with three events over the next month. The monthly roundtable on March 25 features Jack Mintz, Arthur Andersen professor of taxation, discussing "The Business Tax Structure and Canadaıs Economic Performance."  The roundtable begins at 4:00 pm.

On April 7, a Hong Kong Bank of Canada Papers on Asia Workshop features Varouj Aivazian, professor of finance, Richard Bird, professor of economics, and Edward Safarian, professor emeritus of business economics. The subject is ³Asian Fiscal and Financial Framework.²

Prof. Mintz is the speaker at the CIB Research Seminar on April 13 when he presents "Role of Allocation in Globalized Corporate Income Tax." All faculty members and Ph.D. students are invited to attend. The seminar gets underway at 9:30am in RC 500. Copies of the paper can be obtained from Sherene Hu at 978-2451.

HIGH PROFILE GUESTS IN NEW MBA COURSE

A new MBA course for this semester, Boards of Directors: Governance Principles for Private, Public & Not-For-Profit Corporations, has featured a number of high-profile guest speakers from the public and private sectors. The class on March 23 features the Hon. Robert Rae, former premier of Ontario, partner, Goodman, Phillips and Vineberg and Harry Arthurs, president emeritus, York University, in a panel discussion on "Public Sector Boards of Directors." Interested faculty may attend by contacting course co-ordinator Richard Leblanc at leblanc@rotman.utoronto.ca.

Previous speakers to the class have included: the Rt. Hon. John Turner, former prime minister of Canada; Anthony Comper, president and COO, Bank of Montreal; and Purdy Crawford, chairman, Imasco Limited.

MBA STUDENT CLUBS STILL GOING STRONG AT SEMESTERıS END

With the end of the school year fast approaching, the MBA student clubs are still sponsoring speakers. The Consulting Association held a noon-hour event on March 17 featuring Paul ter-Weeme, a partner in the Toronto office of the Mitchell Madison group. He led a brief discussion on the consulting firm and talked about recent projects he was involved in.

On March 24, the Finance Association presents the Citibank Speaker Series featuring Robert Kelly, vice chairman, Toronto-Dominion Bank, speaking on "The Changing Landscape of the Banking Industry." The event is being held in the CIBC room at 4:30 pm with a reception to follow. Please register with Karen Lee, MBA'98, through Embanet, to attend.

The Business Technology Group is hosting John Kelly, CEO and president of JetForm Corporation on March 27 at 12:00 pm in RC 147. Kelly is also a founder of SHL Systemhouse and the current chairman of the Canadian Advanced Technology Association.

NEWSMAKERS

Dan Ondrack, professor of organizational behaviour, was interviewed on March 13 for a feature on the CTV National News on new technology in the office and the impact on work behaviour and job satisfaction. Prof. Ondrack also appeared in the Toronto Star on March 19 commenting on the impact Internet-related economic shifts will have on the labour force.

FACULTY NEWS

Myron J. Gordon, professor emeritus of finance, will give the keynote address at the 30th annual meeting of the Society of Regulatory Financial Analysts on May 8, 1998 in Baltimore, Md. The title of his address will be, "The Finite Horizon Estimation of a Utilityıs Cost of Equity Capital." The presentation will carry forward the model presented in the paper co-authored with Joseph R. Gordon, "The Finite Horizon Expected Return Model," which appeared in the Financial Analysts Journal of May/June 1997.

Gary Latham, Secretary of State Professor of Organizational Behaviour, has been chosen as the recipient of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology's Distinguished Professional Contribution Award for 1998. The Award is bestowed annually in recognition of a Society member who has developed, refined, and implemented practices, procedures, and methods that have had a major impact on both people in organizational settings and the profession of Industrial Organization Psychology.

As recipient of the Distinguished Professor Contribution Award, Prof. Latham has been invited to address the Society's 1999 Annual Conference. In addition, this year he will receive a plaque and cash prize of $1,000 at the Society's 1998 Annual Conference in Dallas.

STAFF CHANGES

Laura Robson is the new corporate services and reference librarian in the Business Information Centre. She will be the first contact in the BIC's corporate client research program. Laura has a Master in Information Studies degree from the U of T and brings to the Rotman School her experience from the Ontario government, Consumer's Gas, running a small business library for a consulting group and reference work at the Government Documents library at the U of T.
