DEAN HALPERN HOSTS TOWN HALL MEETING FOR STUDENTS

Dean Paul Halpern is hosting a town hall meeting for the students of the Rotman School on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 12 pm in RC 134. The meeting is being organized by the Graduate Business Council. It is an excellent opportunity to talk to the Dean and be updated on the latest news about the School including the possible increase in tuition.

COMPANIES ON THE MOVE SPEAKERS' SERIES STARTED

A new program designed to help MBA students with career planning, the ÒCompanies on the MoveÓ speakersÕ series, will kick-off its first session on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 4 pm in RC 392. The purpose of the event to increase awareness among students on the variety of career opportunities available. An excellent panel has been assembled, including:

  • Angela Bel-Irving, director, human resources, Playdium Entertainment Corporation
  • Doug Hayes, vice president sales & marketing, Adidas Canada Ltd.
  • David Ferguson, MBA'96, senior manager, Medcan Health Management Inc.
  • Roman Doroniuk, chief financial officer, Alliance Communications Corporation

ROTMAN EXECUTIVE PROGRAMS PARTICIPATES IN PBS INITIATIVE

The Rotman School executive education classrooms will be the site of a series of broadcasts by internationally prominent management speakers as part of a venture between the School's Executive Programs and the American television network PBS, according to Prof. Dan Ondrack, interim director of the Rotman Executive Programs. The Executive Programs classrooms will be connected by satellite to a network of locations across North America. Alumni of the Executive Programs and select members of the Toronto business community have been invited to participate. A test run of the program will be staged on Tues., Feb. 10 at 1 pm featuring Harvey McKay. His talk will be on "How to Out-Sell, Out-Manage, Out-Motivate and Out-Negotiate Your Competition". McKay is described by Toastmaster's International as one of the five best management speakers in the world and is the author of several books on management.

PROVOST'S SHOWCASE IN MULTIMEDIA AND DIGITAL COURSEWARE

The Provost Office and the Centre for Academic Technology presents a showcase of multimedia and digital courseware developed by members of the U of T community. The showcase is being held at the Centre for Academic Technology, 4th floor, Robarts Library on Thursday, Feb. 12 from 10 am to 4 pm. CASE COMPETITIONS FOR MBA STUDENTS HEAT UP

The case competition for first year MBA students, sponsored by the MBA Global Business Association and the MBA Consulting Club, was held on Friday, Feb. 6. The finalists were judged by representatives from the business community including AT Kearney and the Mitchell Madison Group. Congratulations to the winning team of Karen Webert, Laura Bunston and Sue Schauffert.

The Molson Case Competition begins with a kick-off meeting on Feb.12, when the cases will be distributed to the teams. Entries must be returned by Feb. 27. The top six finalists will present on Friday, Mar. 13 at 2 pm with an awards ceremony to follow at the Madison Ave Pub.

CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SPONSORS TWO EVENTS

The Centre for International Business is holding two events during February, reports Vivien Choy. The monthly roundtable discussion for faculty members and the business community will be held on Feb. 11 at 4 pm in RC 392. Prof. Rebecca Reuber and Eileen Fischer present their study of Canadian small businesses involved in international business.

Edward Safarian, professor emeritus of business economics, will be the main speaker in the Centre's next research seminar on Feb. 27 at 9:30am in RC 500. His topic is "Link Between Trade and Foreign Investment."

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT SEMINARS CONTINUE

The Strategic Marketing Area at the Rotman School is sponsoring a series of seminars featuring academics from business schools across North America. Kristina Dahlin, GSIA, Carnegie Mellon University, will present on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at 3:00 pm in RC 145. Her topic is "Selection, adaption or mere chance? Theories of firm performance over multiple technological changes."

On Feb. 3 Andrew Delios, of the Ivey School of Business, spoke on "Ownership Strategy of Japanese Firms" and on Feb. 5 Paul Ingram, GSIA, Carnegie Mellon University, presented "Interorganizational Relationships and the Performance Outcomes of Experience."

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE

Volunteers are needed to participate on the Rotman School's Health and Safety Committee. The group meets once a month and is responsible for work place inspections. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Gabriela Kampouris, manager, building operations and services, at 978-5961.

TICKET ON SALE FOR COMMERCE STUDENTSÕ ASSOCIATION FORMAL

Tickets are now on sale for the 1998 Commerce Formal, which will be held on Saturday, Mar. 14 at the Four Seasons Hotel, says Jennifer Lee, social director of the Commerce StudentsÕ Association. Commerce students and faculty are invited to attend. Tickets can be purchased from the CSA in RC 118E or by calling 978-4483.

FACULTY NEWS

In honour of the 40th anniversary of the Academy of Management Journal, the ten most often cited articles from the journal were listed. An article co-written by Gary Latham, secretary of state professor of organizational effectiveness, was among those articles listed.

NEWSMAKERS

Lawrence Booth, professor of finance, was kept busy with media interviews regarding the proposed merger between the Royal Bank and Bank of Montreal. Between Jan. 23 and Jan. 26 he was interviewed by CBC Radio affiliates in Calgary and Vancouver in addition to his interviews on CBC Radio national. Prof. Booth appeared on the CBC Newsworld program "Politics" and Canada AM. He was also interviewed by the Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen, Time, Bloomberg Business News and Venture.

Dean Halpern also discussed the proposed merger on the magazine segment of CBCÕs The National on Jan. 23.

Len Brooks, professor of business ethics and accounting, wrote a business ethics commentary for the Globe and Mail Report on Business on Jan. 29. The commentary dealt with the responsibilities of the directors of Curragh Resources Inc. regarding the Westray mine disaster.

Eric Kirzner, adjunct professor of finance, is being featured in the Toronto Star as one of five market experts in the "Choice Portfolio's" series. The market experts were given $50,000 US in imaginary currency to invest in a particular sector or with a particular investment style. ' Easy Chair portfolio was profiled in the Star on Feb. 1. "This portfolio is aimed at helping you sleep at night," says Prof. Kirzner.

Joe DÕCruz, professor of strategic management, and Larry Harrison, manager of information technology, appeared in the University of Toronto National Report '97. They were both quoted for an article on the advances that technology is making into the classroom and especially in the Rotman School. "This technology promotes interactive learning and provides students with a more meaningful educational experience," says Prof. D'Cruz.

Harrison was also interviewed for an article in the Jan.26 issue of Computer Canada on security problems facing IT managers caused by computer hackers. "There is a daily bombardment of the universityÕs machines. People are trying to probe them for one reason or another," the magazine quoted Harrison.

STAFF CHANGES

Vivian Huang has been appointed to the position of Operations Manager, EMBA. Vivian's appointment marks her return to the Rotman School of Management where she was the Case Package Coordinator from 1990 to 1995. For the past two years Vivian has been managing the Doctor of Pharmacy Program in the Faculty of Pharmacy.

In her role as the EMBA Operations Manager Vivian will be responsible for coordinating the day to day operations of EMBA, including: financial administration, registrarial duties, class liaison, international study tours and general office administration.
