A Leader in Corporate Governance from the Rotman School Receives a Global Lifetime Achievement Award.

Toronto, June 27, 2018A global leader in corporate governance from the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management was honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN) last evening in Milan.

David Beatty, Chairman and Conway Director of the Clarkson Center for Business Ethics and Board Effectiveness at the Rotman School, received the award for his significant contribution to the advancement of corporate governance around the globe through his work as an educator, advisor, advocate and practicing board member and chairman.

The ICGN Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to individuals and/or organisations who have demonstrated exceptional achievements in the field of corporate governance and contributed to significant improvements in one or more jurisdictions.

Prof. Beatty has taught corporate governance and strategy courses in several Rotman programs. Under his leadership, the Clarkson Centre monitors Canadian corporate governance trends and provides guidance to firms looking to improve their board effectiveness and disclosure.

He was one of the creators of the Directors Education Program, in partnership with the Institute of Corporate Directors and Rotman Executive Programs, which is the gold standard for directors' education in Canada. He continues to develop new executive programs to promote best practices in governance. In addition, he serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Rotman School.

He spent a decade managing one of North America’s largest food companies. Over his career he has served on 39 different boards of directors in Canada, America, Mexico, Australia and England and been chairman of 9 public companies. Currently he serves on the boards of privately held City Financial (in London, England) and is Lead Director at FIO, a start-up in healthcare in rural communities in Africa and India.

He was the founding Managing Director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance (2003-2008), an organization that represents 50 institutional investors with C$3 trillion of assets under management.

In the not-for-profit sector he served on Peter Drucker's Foundation Board in the United States for over a decade as Vice Chairman. In 2013 he was inducted into the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honor, and in 1994 he was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his services to Papua New Guinea.
