Faculty Honoured with Martin Excellence Awards for Research & Teaching at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

Toronto, March 7, 2016 – Four faculty members at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management have been awarded with the 2015 Roger Martin Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching. Established by Prof. Roger Martin, a former Dean of the Rotman School, the awards are presented annually to faculty members who have achieved distinction for their teaching or research activities.

The co-winners of the Martin Excellence in Research Award are Prof. Liyan Yang and Prof. Ming Hu.

Liyan Yang is an associate professor of finance at the Rotman School. His research interests are in asset pricing, behavioral finance, and information economics. His current research focuses on information transmission and production in financial markets and related regulation issues. He has published research papers in leading economics and finance journals, including Journal of Economic Theory, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Management Science, Review of Financial Studies, and many others. He received the 2015 MIT Asia Conference in Accounting Best Paper Award (Runner-Up), the 2015 RFS Distinguished Referee Award, The Chinese Finance Association Best Paper Award in 2011 and 2013, the Northern Finance Association (NFA) Best Paper Award in 2011 and 2012, and the 2009 Financial Management Association (FMA) Conference Best Paper Award.

Ming Hu is an associate professor of operations management at the Rotman School. His research explores strategic interactions among firms and between firms and consumers, in the context of operations management. His research has received media coverage in Canada and internationally. He was the recipient of Innovation Research Award by Hewlett-Packard Labs in 2008-2010; Honorable Mention in the Junior Faculty Interest Group Paper Competition by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) in 2014; and First Prize, Annual Conference Best Paper Award by Chinese Scholars Association for Management Science and Engineering (CSAMSE) in 2015. Most recently, he focuses on operations management in the context of social buying, crowdfunding, crowdsourcing, and two-sided markets.

The co-winners of the Martin Excellence in Teaching Award are Prof. Jia Lin Xie and Prof. Alexander Dyck.

Jia Lin Xie is Magna Professor in Management and professor of organizational behaviour and human resource management at the Rotman School. Her research focuses on the fit between employees and their work environment (P-E fit) and the effects of such fit and misfit on employee well-being. Another area of her research expertise is cross-cultural management, with a focus on Chinese organizational behavior. She has taught numerous courses in the Rotman School’s MBA, Executive MBA and Executive Education programs in the topics of organizational behaviour, leadership, cross-cultural management, ethics and research methodology. Prof. Xie is Past President of the International Association for Chinese Management Research.

Alexander Dyck is a professor of finance and business economics at the Rotman School and holds the Professorship in Corporate Governance. He is also an Academic Director of the Director’s Education Program, jointly developed by the Institute of Corporate Directors (ICD) and the Rotman School, , a board member of the Rotman International Center for Pension Management, and a Fellow at the Michael Lee-Chin Family Institute for Corporate Citizenship at the Rotman School. He teaches popular PhD and MBA courses in corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and private equity. His research interests include corporate governance, corporate finance, corporate social responsibility, regulation and privatization, the media and financial markets, and taxation.
