Roger Martin Excellence in Teaching and Research Awards Presented to Four Faculty at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

Toronto, February 4, 2015 – Four faculty members at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management have been awarded with the 2014 Roger Martin Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching. The awards, established by Prof. Roger Martin, former Dean, are intended to annually recognize and encourage excellence in the research and teaching activities of faculty members at the Rotman School.

The co-winners of the Roger Martin Excellence in Teaching Award are Prof. Mara Lederman & Prof. Bernardo Blum who co-teach and developed the Business Problem Solving Practicum, known as the Capstone, in the first year of the Rotman Full Time MBA program. The course gives students hands-on experience solving real business problem using real data and in real-time.

Prof. Blum is an associate professor of business economics, who joined the Rotman School in 2002 after completing his PhD in economics from UCLA. In addition to the Capstone course, he has taught international business and economics courses in both the Rotman MBA and Rotman Commerce programs and is also teaching in the newly established business economics stream in the Rotman PhD program.

Prof. Lederman is an associate professor of strategic management, who earned her PhD from MIT in economics. She joined the Rotman School in 2003. Previously she has taught courses on strategic management and strategic alliances in both the Rotman MBA and Rotman Commerce programs. Both Profs. Blum and Lederman also teach courses in Data Literacy and Analytics in Rotman Executive Programs.

The winners of the Roger Martin Excellence in Research Award are Prof. Heski Bar-Isaac and Prof. Dmitry Krass.

Prof. Bar-Isaac is an associate professor of business economics. He has broad interests in information economics and industrial organization. Recently his work has focused on vertical relations and anti-trust, internet economics, and economic theories of reputation. He has published in leading journals including RAND Journal of Economics, Journal of Industrial Economics, American Economic Review, and Review of Economic Studies. He joined the Rotman School in 2012 from New York University.

Prof. Krass is a professor of operations management and statistics. His research interests include service operations, logistics, facility location and management issues, distributive service systems, and analytical modeling in marketing. Over 50 of his peer-reviewed papers have appeared in leading academic journals such as Operations Management and Management Science. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he has severed in several administrative positions including coordinator of the Rotman PhD program in operations management and statistics since 1995. He joined the Rotman School in 1989.
