INTEGRATIVE THINKING AND YOUR CAREER IN...
Not-for-Profit Management

In the competitive world of business education, Rotman has one key advantage that no other school can match: an innovative approach built on Integrative Thinking.

Our students receive a solid grounding in all the functional areas of business: Finance, Strategic Management, Organizational Behaviour + Human Resources Management, etc. But they also learn how to think beyond them to consider the big picture, approaching each challenge with creativity, a willingness to consider multiple perspectives, and the ability to build new and better models. It’s a groundbreaking approach that can help you shape your business — and the world— for the better.

Currently, more than 70 Rotman alumni work for not-for-profit organizations. Meet some recent graduates who are putting Integrative Thinking to work in this arena:

Sarah Stern (MBA), Regional Associate, East and Southern Africa,
Right to Play, Toronto

"My Rotman Degree is what got me in the front door of Right To Play. I had been interested in working for the organization since 2003, as I really believed in what they do - using sport and play to promote peace and development. Five years later, with my newly minted MBA in hand, I was there. While my pre-MBA background was in not-for-profit, I was convinced that after Rotman I would enter the 'money-making world'; but as my time at school passed, I found that I was continuously drawn to opportunities that involved social change and development. At Rotman I learned much more than accounting, finance, marketing and strategy; I learned how to pull them all together and to come up with innovative solutions to problems. In the 18 months since graduation I have had many opportunities to call on these skills, from operating our U.S. National Office during a gap between Directors to working on a new organizational funding strategy, to my current position in Uganda gaining a better understanding of programming and setting up funding structures. The skills I acquired at Rotman have enabled me to excel in these diverse scenarios and to ultimately change the lives of children in some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world."

Apoorve Singhal (MBA), Overseas Program Manager, World Literacy Canada, Toronto: “My work at an international NGO centers on achieving social impact through socioeconomic value creation. By using the tools I learned at Rotman, I am working on combining different operational models to merge opportunities in both commercial markets and social sectors. This strategy allows me to maximize social impact as well as diversify my organization’s income by reaching new markets and creating new enterprises. Integrative Thinking helps me effectively consider different views and synthesize a solution. This is an essential skill for any organization that depends on human capital and relationship capital."
